A stinky washing machine is caused by the dirt and grime of the laundry you have just washed. Combined with moisture left in the washer and the sure flourishing of bacteria, you get a smelly washing machine.
Now push your sleeves up your elbows because it is time to do some serious cleaning:
Step 1: Get clean towels and begin removing any lingering debris in your washer's drum. Make sure you get rid of those dirt seated in the corners of the tub. Afterwards, begin preparing a baking soda paste. This is just a combination of baking soda and water.
Step 2: Use a clean end of the towel and dip it in the baking soda paste. Start sloughing off the walls of the washer's drum. This cleaning ingredient has natural abrasive properties so it is easier to get rid of collected dirt and detergent oil on the drum wall. Some people add baking soda to the water cycle but if the particles are not properly dissolves, this can lead to clogging so you should just rub it on the tub walls instead.
Step 3: Now wipe out excess baking soda particles. Prepare vinegar or citrus solution this time. They work well in deodorizing the mattress. Vinegar is an ingredient that can get rid of musty, moldy and stinky smell in anything but some people just could not tolerate the strong pungent smell of vinegar. If you are like that, substitute it with citrus juice. Run an empty water cycle and then add the solution.
Step 4: Allow the water cycle to swirl inside your washer. If the tub is stinks a lot, you can pause this cycle for a while to allow the solution to do its thing inside the washing machine. You can resume after 10-15 minutes.
Step 5: Allow it to drain completely. Once the draining process has finished, run another water cycle but this time make it a hot water cycle. This will disinfect the washer drum as well as remove any lingering citrus or vinegar smell.
Step 6: When water has already drained off, you can dry the tub with another clean towel. Make sure no pools of water are left lying somewhere. Do not close drum door yet. Leave it there for a few more minutes so air can flow in and remove odor completely. Now your washing machine smells like new again. Do these steps whenever your washer begins to stink.
